The storyboarding process was a crucial step in creating this dynamic visual story. It began with a breakout of the story into the different components that make up a classic story structure. Then it was time to jump and start visualizing this outlandish underwater adventure! From there, the storyboard went through multiple rounds of rough sketches before reaching completion at 85 frames. Here you can see some examples of the storyboarding panels.

Asset Creation

Assets were primarily created by referencing the storyboard compositions to create a skeleton for each frame, with all necessary components in place in order to import each frame into After Effects and begin the animation process.

Each character/fish was given its own unique color and design using the established color palette. Reds, pinks, and purples were incorporated in order to contrast the deep blue ocean environment.

Boat and net: As the story takes place primarily underwater, the boat is only seen from one perspective. The net was originally created as a simple shape and then manipulated by puppet pins in After Effects.

Music Composition

All music writing, producing and mixing were all done in Logic Pro X.

The beginning theme song is aimed to be light-hearted and happy with a mix of snaps, percussion, bass guitar, electric piano, and marimba. As the story transitions to the distortion from the boat, analog homemade synths were sampled in to add chaos into the sound design. Electronic synths made with Serum as well as electronic beats to give an unnatural feel to it, representing the noise-pollution. In the end, the theme comes back but with addition to electronic beats and clapping introduced earlier, as well as a horns section to bring the scene feel more triumphant.
